Teriyaki Shrimp
Teriyaki shrimp is a Japanese dish that features succulent shrimp coated in a sweet and savory teriyaki sauce. The dish is typically grilled, but it can also be sautéed or broiled.
To make teriyaki shrimp, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 pound of large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/4 cup of soy sauce
- 1/4 cup of mirin (Japanese rice wine)
- 1/4 cup of sake (Japanese rice wine)
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, and cornstarch until the sugar and cornstarch are fully dissolved.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until they turn pink and are fully cooked.
- Pour the teriyaki sauce over the shrimp and stir until the shrimp are fully coated. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce has thickened and become glossy.
- Sprinkle the sesame seeds over the top of the shrimp (if using) and serve immediately with steamed rice or vegetables.
Health Benefits:
Shrimp is a great source of protein, low in fat and calories, and contains essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and vitamin B12. Teriyaki sauce, however, can be high in sugar and sodium, so it’s important to use it in moderation. You can make a healthier version of teriyaki sauce by using low-sodium soy sauce, reducing the amount of sugar used, and adding in some fresh ginger and garlic for extra flavor and health benefits.
