Alibaba plans to implement generative AI across applications, and China announces new regulations.

On April 11th, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd unveiled its generative AI model named Tongyi Qianwen, which will be integrated into all the company’s applications soon. Tongyi Qianwen is an impressive AI large language model that can perform various tasks such as drafting invitation letters, planning trip itineraries, and advising shoppers on types of makeup to purchase. In a filmed demonstration, Alibaba showcased the AI’s capabilities, and CEO Daniel Zhang expressed his belief that it will bring about significant changes to the way people work and live their lives.

Initially, Tongyi Qianwen will be integrated into Alibaba’s workplace messaging app, DingTalk, and its voice assistant, Tmall Genie. Additionally, the cloud unit of the company plans to offer Tongyi Qianwen to clients so that they can develop their customized large language models.

However, with the release of the generative AI model came the Chinese government’s publication of draft rules outlining how generative AI services should be managed. The draft rules, open for public comment until May 10th, require content generated by generative AI technology to adhere to “core socialist values,” as well as laws on data security and personal information protection. Those who do not comply with the rules may face fines or criminal investigation.

While the technology will bring about many changes in the future, it has sparked concern over its ethical implications, impact on national security, jobs, and education. Governments around the world are looking into how to best regulate generative AI technology, and China is no exception. Charlie Chai, an analyst from 86Research, believes that the new rules set up obstacles for foreign companies looking to provide AI services in the country, benefiting domestic companies.

In summary, Alibaba’s generative AI model, Tongyi Qianwen, has impressive capabilities that could revolutionize the way people work and live. However, the release of the model has also brought about concerns over its ethical implications and calls for its regulation. As the Chinese government drafts new rules on generative AI technology, the industry is poised for significant changes.
