Virat Kohli Withdraws from Initial Two Tests Against England: Indian Batsman Opts Out

The 35-year-old former captain has informed India skipper Rohit Sharma and the team management about his decision to step away from the upcoming five-Test series, citing “certain personal situations that require his presence and full attention.” The series is set to commence in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Kohli’s withdrawal follows England batter Harry Brook’s return to the UK for personal reasons just a day prior. A stalwart in Indian cricket with 113 Tests under his belt, Kohli holds the fourth position in the country’s all-time leading run-scorers with 8,848 runs. This marks the first time in over two years that he will miss a Test, the last instance being due to a back spasm during the match against South Africa in Johannesburg.

A statement from the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India conveyed Kohli’s prioritization of representing the country while acknowledging the exigencies of his personal situation. The BCCI, along with the team management, expressed support for the star batter and confidence in the remaining squad members to step up.

In light of Kohli’s decision, the BCCI has urged the media and fans to respect his privacy and refrain from speculating on the nature of his personal reasons. A replacement for Kohli in the squad will be announced, considering his significant role as the team’s captain in 68 Tests from 2014 to 2022.
