According to the CDC, the flu shot offered “substantial protection.”

According to a study released on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu vaccination offered “significant protection” throughout this flu season for people of all ages, including the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.

A research from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices shown that those who received the influenza vaccine were well protected in the 2022–2023 season from “inpatient, emergency department, and outpatient sickness among all ages.”

The government stated that these findings “underline that influenza immunization can give considerable protection against influenza and its potentially dangerous consequences.”

According to one of the studies included in the presentation, children who received the influenza vaccination were 45% protected from the main virus. According to the CDC, this percentage has been about 30% in past seasons.

The CDC also discovered that children who had received the vaccine were 68% less likely to require hospitalization and 48% less likely to visit an emergency room as a result of the flu or a flu-related illness.

Adults were 39% less likely to be hospitalized for a flu-related illness or complication and 44% less likely to attend the emergency room overall. For the 2021–2022 season, the final vaccination only resulted in a 25% decrease in the likelihood that people will attend emergency rooms or urgent care centers or be hospitalized.

Researchers focused on the vaccine’s efficacy in the immunocompromised population and persons over 65 since these populations are more likely to experience a severe flu-related illness and less likely to have an immunological response to the vaccination.

As the percentage of positive tests reached roughly 26% in November and early December, the 2022–2023 flu virus had reached its height. The percentage of positive cases is now about 1.7%. Hospitalizations due to influenza have also stabilized.

The CDC said that this season’s influenza activity was greater and more harmful than it was in the prior two seasons, despite the fact that the number of individuals with the flu has decreased. In actuality, 111 children died as a result of the virus.
