Blackhawks star Patrick Kane is acquired by the New York Rangers in a sensational transaction.

The Chicago Blackhawks have traded Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers, reuniting him with former teammate Artemi Panarin and bolstering their chances of winning the Stanley Cup in the highly competitive Eastern Conference. Despite reports suggesting that New York was out of the running after acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko from St. Louis earlier in the year, Kane was eager to join Panarin again, and he had the final say because of his no-movement clause.

The Rangers sent a conditional 2023 second-round draft pick, a 2025 fourth-rounder, and minor league defenseman Andy Welinski to the rebuilding Blackhawks for Kane and minor league defenseman Cooper Zech, with Chicago acquiring Finnish defenseman Vili Saarijarvi from Arizona as part of the trade. The Coyotes retained 25% of Kane’s salary, and the Blackhawks paid 50%, with Chicago getting a conditional 2024 first-rounder if the Rangers reach the Eastern Conference final this year.

Kane could debut for the Rangers against Philadelphia or Ottawa, and he’s in excellent form, with seven goals and three assists in his last four games before the trade. He spent his entire career with the Blackhawks before the trade and played a significant role in the franchise’s three Stanley Cup wins in 2010, 2013, and 2015. He was also a Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 2013 and won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP in 2016.

Despite Kane’s departure, the Blackhawks praised his contributions and said he would always be part of their family. The Rangers, on the other hand, are ecstatic about the acquisition and believe Kane’s presence will significantly improve their chances of winning the Stanley Cup.
