Teriyaki Shrimp

Teriyaki shrimp is a Japanese dish that features succulent shrimp coated in a sweet and savory teriyaki sauce. The dish is typically grilled, but it can also be sautéed or broiled.

To make teriyaki shrimp, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 pound of large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup of mirin (Japanese rice wine)
  • 1/4 cup of sake (Japanese rice wine)
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, and cornstarch until the sugar and cornstarch are fully dissolved.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until they turn pink and are fully cooked.
  3. Pour the teriyaki sauce over the shrimp and stir until the shrimp are fully coated. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce has thickened and become glossy.
  4. Sprinkle the sesame seeds over the top of the shrimp (if using) and serve immediately with steamed rice or vegetables.

Shrimp is a great source of protein, low in fat and calories, and contains essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and vitamin B12. Teriyaki sauce, however, can be high in sugar and sodium, so it’s important to use it in moderation. You can make a healthier version of teriyaki sauce by using low-sodium soy sauce, reducing the amount of sugar used, and adding in some fresh ginger and garlic for extra flavor and health benefits.
