Scandinavian NATO ratifications are not given a deadline by the Hungarian government’s parliamentarians.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Tuesday, March 7th, 2023, during his visit to Stockholm, that it is time for Sweden and Finland to join NATO. Speaking at a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, he emphasized that the inclusion of these two countries is a crucial priority and that progress is being made in this regard. Mr. Stoltenberg also stated that he had scheduled another meeting between Turkey, Sweden, and Finland at NATO Headquarters on March 9th. He welcomed Hungary’s Parliament’s start of discussions on ratification, and he expects the process to be completed soon.
The Secretary General emphasized that Sweden and Finland’s membership would enhance the Alliance’s capabilities by providing highly skilled forces, advanced defense industries, and years of experience in working with Allies. He added that their applications have already boosted their security, and NATO would not hesitate to act if their security was threatened.
Mr. Stoltenberg warned of President Putin’s preparations for new attacks against Ukraine and emphasized the urgent need to step up and sustain support for Ukraine during his discussions with Prime Minister Kristersson. He also expressed his gratitude to Sweden for its significant financial, humanitarian, and military aid to Ukraine.
The NATO Secretary General will also participate in an informal meeting of European Union Defense Ministers in Stockholm on Wednesday.
