A deal for Aaron Rodgers between the Packers and Jets is progressing.

On Monday, the Green Bay Packers’ General Manager, Brian Gutekunst, indicated that the team may not necessarily receive a first-round draft pick for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which suggests that the Packers may have abandoned their previous stance of requiring the 13th overall pick in the upcoming draft as part of any deal. However, it also suggests that a first-round pick in 2024 could be possible, subject to future events.

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, who is currently reporting from Arizona where NFL teams have gathered, negotiations between the Packers and the New York Jets are progressing and a deal is becoming increasingly likely. The Jets have reportedly been willing to offer two second-round picks for Rodgers, with the Packers receiving one pick in 2023 and another in 2024. The 2024 pick could potentially become a first-round pick based on the Jets’ performance with Rodgers in 2023. However, the Jets would like protection in the form of a pick that would be returned to them in 2025 if Rodgers were to retire after only one season with the team.

While negotiations are ongoing, progress has been made as the Packers are no longer insisting on the Jets’ 2023 first-round pick. Furthermore, it is suggested that a mechanism similar to the one used when Brett Favre moved from Green Bay to New York in 2008 could be used to determine the 2024 pick based on team and/or player performance in 2023.
