Military Chief Announces Philippines’ Plan for Island Development in the South China Sea

The Philippines is set to enhance its presence on islands in the South China Sea, which it asserts as part of its territory, in an effort to improve living conditions for its troops, as stated by Manila’s military chief, Romeo Brawner, during a press briefing on Monday.

This development unfolds against a backdrop of escalating tensions between the Philippines and China. Both nations lay claim to territories in the South China Sea and have exchanged allegations of aggressive behavior in this strategically vital waterway.

Beyond the Second Thomas Shoal, locally referred to as Ayungin, the Philippines maintains control over eight other features within the South China Sea, considering them integral to its exclusive economic zone.

“We aim to enhance all nine, with a particular focus on the islands under our occupation,” emphasized Brawner following a command conference led by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the military headquarters.

Among these features is Thitu Island, recognized as Pag-asa, the largest and strategically significant island in the South China Sea, situated approximately 300 miles west of the Philippine province of Palawan.

To improve the living conditions for troops stationed on the deliberately grounded warship at Second Thomas Shoal since 1999, a desalination machine is being considered by the military to address water needs, bolstering the Philippines’ assertion of sovereignty.

The South China Sea remains a contentious area, with Brunei, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam all asserting competing claims of sovereignty. This region serves as a vital conduit for goods valued at over $3 trillion annually.

In line with the country’s shift from internal defense to territorial concerns, the military’s modernization plans encompass the acquisition of additional ships, radars, and aircraft, further underlining the Philippines’ commitment to safeguarding its territorial interests.
