Andy Murray Suggests His Australian Open Journey Might Be Over Following a First-Round Defeat in Straight Sets

Andy Murray is contemplating the possibility that his recent straight-set defeat in the first round of the Australian Open might mark the end of his participation in the tournament. The 36-year-old, a former world No. 1 and three-time grand slam winner, suffered a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 loss to Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry. This defeat, just his second opening-round loss in 16 years at the Australian Open, has left Murray reflecting on the prospect of it being his last appearance.

Expressing disappointment with his performance, Murray acknowledged the stark contrast to his matches in the previous year and regretted not engaging more with the crowd. The five-time Australian Open finalist, who battled significant injuries, including two hip surgeries in 2019, now competes with a metal hip, making his presence at the grand slam a remarkable achievement. When questioned about retirement, Murray revealed ongoing discussions with his team and family but refrained from providing a definite timeline.

In contrast, other tournament favorites fared better in the men’s draw. Third-seeded Daniil Medvedev secured a second-round spot after overcoming a set deficit against Terence Atmane, who retired due to cramps. Seventh-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also rallied from a set down, showcasing a new serving technique. Meanwhile, 21-year-old US tennis sensation Ben Shelton advanced to the second round with a straight-set victory over Roberto Bautista Agut.
