Gautam Singhania: New Accusations Arise Against Indian Textiles Magnate
Negotiations for a divorce settlement between Ms. Modi and the Indian billionaire have hit a major snag, with talks reportedly collapsing after Ms. Modi’s request for 75% of Mr. Singhania’s $1.4 billion fortune. In a recent complaint obtained by the BBC, Ms. Modi alleges a disturbing pattern of harassment and intimidation by Mr. Singhania, leading to a state of constant fear for her and her children, who are currently residing with her father.
The complaint outlines accusations of Mr. Singhania installing spyware in Ms. Modi’s car and his staff forcibly occupying her father’s property in Udwada, Gujarat. Furthermore, Ms. Modi claims that Mr. Singhania has been tarnishing her reputation by falsely alleging an affair with an unnamed physical trainer and a board member of the publicly listed Raymond Group, a prominent consumer brand in India, of which both parties are co-promoters.
Ms. Modi also expresses concerns about her livelihood, citing attempts by her husband to undermine her fitness venture, “Body Art,” and fears of potential eviction from their current residence. The complaint was filed with the police, confirmed by a constable at Mumbai’s Gamdevi police station.
In response, Mr. Singhania’s press office declined to comment on the specific allegations but labeled them as “false and baseless.” Mr. Singhania emphasized his decision to remain silent for the sake of his daughters, expressing confidence in the truth prevailing eventually.
The public rift between the couple became apparent when a video surfaced showing Ms. Modi being denied entry to a company Diwali party in November. She alleged physical assault on herself and their minor daughter by a member of the Raymond Group, claims which Mr. Singhania has denied.
In an effort to restart stalled settlement talks, Ms. Modi reportedly proposed involving corporate figures such as Anand Jain from India’s Reliance Group, senior banker K V Kamath, and tycoon Ajay Piramal.
Despite the personal turmoil, Mr. Singhania retains his position as chairman and managing director of the Raymond Group, while Ms. Modi remains on the board.
