Grand Jury Indicts Man for Attempted Murder of Las Vegas Judge During Sentencing

A man who launched a startling attack on a Nevada judge during a sentencing hearing in Las Vegas last month, an incident captured in a courtroom video that quickly went viral, has now been indicted for attempted murder.

Deobra Redden, aged 30, was indicted on nine counts by a grand jury in Las Vegas on Thursday, with his arraignment set for Feb. 29.

The incident occurred as Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus was preparing to announce Redden’s sentence in a case involving attempted battery on Jan. 3. In a sudden move, Redden leaped over the bench towards her.

The courtroom cameras recorded the ensuing chaos as Holthus’ clerk and a court marshal struggled to restrain Redden. The video circulated widely on the internet and social media. A week later, Judge Holthus sentenced him to a prison term of up to four years for the battery charge to which he had pleaded guilty in November.

The new indictment for attempted murder alleges that Redden attacked Holthus by grabbing her, pulling her hair, placing his hands around her throat, and/or striking her on the head using methods not specified. Additionally, he is accused of assaulting a Las Vegas police officer by punching, kicking, and/or pushing them.

A lawyer who represented Redden during the initial hearing did not respond immediately to a request for comment on Saturday.

Redden’s foster mother, Karen Springer, and his older sister, LaDonna Daniels, informed reporters outside the court last month that Redden had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, court records indicate that he was found competent to stand trial.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson mentioned at the time that Redden’s criminal history as an adult included convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors, primarily involving violent offenses.
